A Bevy of Quails

My favorite kind of bird is hands-down a quail, and I'm always thrilled when I see the neighborhood quails out and about.  I came home from helping with school vision screenings one day to find 13 of them hanging out under our neighbors' car.  It was a pleasant surprise!

Family Game Night

I'm not sure if you can play games with the whole family and have everyone have fun at the same time.

Case in point:

Elliott had his best round of Five Crowns ever.  Molly...was not equally thrilled.

Double Header

I usually try to spread out our family trips to plays pretty evenly, but sometimes you have a play that's only in town for a limited amount of time, and then you also find out that the tickets are BOGO to the local city theater so you have to go to both!  We went to The Foreigner on Friday night and could not stop laughing.  It was truly hilarious!  On Saturday, we went to a shadow puppet theater called Song of the North which was a story from a Persian epic.  It was fun to watch and truly fascinating to see all the work that went into making it.

This is them testing equipment before the start of the play, not the actual show (which you can not take pictures of).

Celebrating Forty

I turned forty this year!  I'm not opposed to growing older, but I do have a funny story about being forty.  Our family was listening to the NPR Sunday puzzle and the puzzle described "Star Wars" as a classic movie.  I mentioned that I wasn't sure about a movie just two years older than me (Return of the Jedi) being named a "classic."  Elliott: "Mom, does that mean in two years you'll be a classic, too?"

We had a low-key celebration with a few outings and a few fun foods.  I was excited to drag my family down to the Springville quilt show.  Here were some of my favorites:

I made my own desserts, which is always fun because when you have unique taste in desserts, you can make your own and make sure they fit :)

A giant maple-frosted snickerdoodle for my actual birthday.

Roasted pistachio ice cream and a roasted plum and biscoff icebox cake for the family.

Christ is Our Rock

We had a rock painting activity for Relief Society recently.  Painting is not really in my wheelhouse and also makes me nervous.  We did several painting activities when I was a teenager and they usually did not go so well.  I pulled up a picture on my phone and then made sure I had a small enough brush. I've learned from Molly (who can actually paint) that you can cause a lot of problems for yourself with too big of a brush.  I'm happy with how this one turned out!

Visitors

I've mentioned that Elliott's friends come over all the time, but I neglected to add that one of Elliott's friends routinely brings his dog with him.  I think he comes over to our house when he's supposed to be out walking the dog.  Miles and Molly have made fast friends with Kevin the Pomeranian.  It's very exciting for them to say hello to a dog every day!

All the August Food

I love doing these looks at the food I made in a month.  They're a different kind of journal and they've been a lot of fun to look at!

August 1: Zucchini basil frittata and grapes. I'm never sad about a breakfast for dinner!

August 2: We were having a ward party, so I made homemade Oreos and coleslaw potato salad.  I have a long-standing notice that the foods I bring to church parties never get eaten so I just bring things that I'll be happy to have the leftovers of.  Molly and I did a side-by-side tasting of a normal Oreo and a homemade one and this is when we learned that normal Oreos really, really do not smell like chocolate.

August 3: I love these cheeseburger salad bowls from Our Best Bites.  I've never been able to find the crispy shoestring potatoes it calls for but it's great with normal chips!
August 4: This baked tomato basil butter pasta did not quite work out in terms of making its own suace but was still pretty tasty.
August 5: I loved this orecchiette with chicken, summer vegetables, and lime.  We had a lot of leftovers because Miles was at FSY and it made for a very tasty lunch.
August 6: No one was a huge fan of this salmorejo but especially not Gerrit, who acted like he was being poisoned when being given cold tomato soup.
August 7: Luckily, everyone was a fan of sausage and potato quesadillas.  I made Elliott a plain quesadilla because he doesn't love sausage.
August 8: This grilled tofu with grilled veggie skewers was SO GOOD fresh and NOT GOOD AT ALL as leftovers, so in the future I would only grill exactly as much as I think we're going to eat.
August 9th: We made three flavors of ice cream cookie sandwiches (they all have the same dough, you just change the mix ins).  I had a different dinner planned but we had a lot of drama needing to go back to Provo for some things Miles left at FSY, so we just grilled hot dogs.

August 10th:  The whole family worked together to make sheet pan chili crisp salmon with sesame peas and coconut rice.  It was delicious!
August 11th: This is the dinner that didn't get made on Saturday, which was steak, herby zhug tomatoes, a peach and feta salad, and grapes.
August 12th: I loved the brown butter orzo with zucchini.  Elliott was able to parse it as buttered noodles, which meant he actually ate a dinner with a reasonable number of vegetables for once.
August 13th: Peach lassi smoothie bowls for the first day of school!  We had chicken with a sundried tomato and dill sauce and a spinach salad with beans, roasted peppers, and sharp cheddar for dinner.  The chicken was even better than I thought it would be.

August 14th: We had mediterranean sheet pan gnocchi.  I really liked it but not everyone did.  I also made homemade malted cookies and cream ice cream (ice cream is our back to school tradition_ and it was literally completely gone before I could take a picture.
August 15th: We did a pepperoni pizza and a peach, jalapeno, and bacon pizza because we always do pizza for my brother's birthday (one day late here because of schedule constraints) and AGAIN everyone ate all the food before I could take pictures.

August 16th: I aggressively did not want to make dinner but somehow managed to convince myself to make this falafel salad.  I did force various people to help me.  Something I really liked about this particular salad (recipe from BHG) is that the base, falafel-less salad was also delicious on its own.
August 17th: This is an almond butter banana cake and a skillet broccoli chicken pot pie for an all-around comfort food kind of dinner.  Everything is brown and doesn't look fancy but it definitely tastes good.

August 18th:  We had lentils with jammy tomatoes and feta (pretty good, also pretty dill-forward) along with a loaf of bread from the grocery store and some raspberries.
August 19th: I forgot to take a picture of the teriyaki beef bowls so you have the one from the website!  This was a big win with the whole family and I always like a dinner where everyone can pick their own toppings.
August 20th: I'm still cooking through that pizza cookbook and here you have a Sicilian-style loaded veggie pizza. You also have some brown butter peach cookies because I am ALL IN on peach season.  I loved these and they also disappeared very fast.

August 21st:  Another dinner where you get the website's picture :)  This one is a grilled steak, parmesan and lemon salad.  I've been so excited to grill all the things since we got a grill earlier this summer.
August 22nd: The skillet cheddar turkey burgers fell apart SO MUCH in the pan but were still tasty.  We won some fry sauce from a library trivia night so I pulled that out with some tater tots.
August 23rd: We went to Thanksgiving Point with Gerrit's family and they bought us dinner on the way out.  We had a mixture of Costa Vida and Chubby's.

August 24th:  This is fried egg pasta with garlicky crunchies and it's another one of those dinners that I can basically convince Elliott is just buttered noodles.  We also had a caramelized peach snickerdoodle cobbler.  I forgot to set a timer, had to guess, and probably did not cook the top long enough but it was still very tasty.

August 25th: I almost forgot to take pictures of dinner, which was one pepperoni pizza and one brussels sprout and ricotta pizza but I remembered while Molly was still eating hers, so here you go!
August 26th: I have loved tostadas ever since one of my roommates used to make them as
August 27th: I didn't know what to make and Gerrit requested barbecue beef cups.  He has long listed them as his favorite but has now decided he may not like them as much as he thought. We also had chocolate chewies, which are kind of loosely a cookie and mostly chocolate-covered pecans.

August 28th: This was basically just spaghetti with homemade tomato sauce but it was really good!  I could NOT convince Elliott that this one was buttered noodles and he wouldn't eat it because it was made with fresh tomatoes and he could not handle that.

August 29th:  This is ground pork stir-fried with asparagus and sauce with rice and everyone liked this one.

August 30th:  I do not have pictures OR memory of what we had for dinner this night, which usually means we ended up scrounging for leftovers because I could not bring myself to cook.

August 31st: This is a salted caramel peach crisp (excellent, and there's no worries about crisp topping not cooking like a cobbler) along with steak and creamy summer squash orzo.  It's creamy from Boursin and steak is always a big win both because I can use the grill and everyone likes it.
