I love reading hour-by-hour accounts on other people's blogs. It's so interesting to see how other people's days go! I picked a day at random and decided I would just follow an ordinary day.
I think I jinxed myself. It ended up being a really crazy, far far far from normal day!
1:35 I hear crying, so I get Elliott out of his bed and feed him.
1:55 Elliott finishes eating. I put him back to bed and am incredibly grateful that A) he went back to sleep, that B) my pregnancy insomnia is over, and C) that Gerrit’s new nose thing stops the snoring.
6:15 Good morning! Time to shower, wash face, brush teeth, deodorant, and fix my hair. I’d get dressed but Elliott sleeps in my closet :)
6:30 Grab some Cheerios and a banana and eat them while reading my scriptures.
6:40 Quick check on Facebook and both my e-mails
6:45 I'm just finishing up an e-mail to a student when I hear Elliott cry. While I feed him, I grade 3 student papers. 12 to go by the end of the day!
7:10 Elliott’s done eating so it’s time to play with my squishy little baby. Who wouldn’t want to snuggle with this! He loves playing patty cake and eensy weensy spider.
7:40 Time to tidy up the house with my squishy little baby. We pick up clothes, toys, couch cushions, shin guards, popsicle wrappers, empty boxes, crayons, and more on the ground floor. I am getting really good at picking things up with my toes! We sing songs while we vacuum. We wipe down counters and clean the sink and chatter as we go. We go upstairs and get dressed and play peek-a-boo with the baby in the mirror. Gerrit wakes up around this time, eats his breakfast, and works on the dishes. We chat with Gerrit and give daddy lots of snuggles
8:40 We’re finally done with the cleaning! Miles and Molly aren’t awake, but they had a late night because of the Memorial Day holiday. Molly’s been sleeping in a lot recently, and Miles might be getting a cold.
8:45 Time to pack a lunch for Gerrit. He gets leftover pork tacos, baked beans, an apple, and some blackberry pie bars.
8:55 Elliott’s second breakfast :) I pull out the grading again. 4 more down, and now just 8 to go by the end of the day! I also look into a weird technical situation for one of the other sociology teachers.
9:30 Now I’m wondering about Miles and Molly. Miles wakes up and just wants to play with Elliott. He shows him all of his toys and then reads him a story.
10:00 Molly’s up now too, so it’s time to get all of the kids dressed and eat some breakfast. Molly gets chocolate Cheerios, Miles gets his “cereal mix” of Chocolate Cheerios, Honeycomb, and Raisin Bran, and I have my mid-morning snack of a homemade lime fruit and nut bar.
Miles and I have this conversation over breakfast:
“Mom, I wish our car had a navigator that worked like this. First, you would put in a category like “Temples” and then you would put in what temple you wanted to go and then it would tell you how to get there.
That’s called a GPS. Some cars have them. Like nice new cars.
So, is your car old? Like really old?
It’s 8 years old.
Okay, so really old!
10:30 We head to the American Fork and Pleasant Grove Libraries. We amuse ourselves by looking at the train, the fire truck, and listening to Elliott cry.
11:15 Home at last! I feed Elliott while we read some of our new pirate books
11:40 Elliott is fast asleep, so I put him upstairs for a nap and make lunch for me and the kids. We all have leftover pork sandwiches, applesauce, and blackberry pie bars.
11:55 My quick check of Facebook, email, blogs, etc.
12:05 It's time to find shoes, sweatshirts, and the umbrella so we can head out to the bus stop in the rain for the last real day of kindergarten.
12:12 We head out for the bus at the very last possible minute. We barely made it in time!
12:15 Back home. I set Molly up with a coloring book and some Daniel Tiger so I can grade. Molly loves, loves, loves her new water coloring book.
12:35 Four more papers graded. Only four to go! I need a break so I go clean the toilets. Exciting, I know.
12:55 Back to grading...
1:15 Yay! Done with grading for the day! I still have a few more minutes before Molly’s show finishes, so I kick back with a crossword puzzle.
1:30 We’re both done, so it’s time to play. We play “My Little Pony Goes to the Circus.” We do puzzles. We read “You Will Be My Friend” for the 200th time.
2:20 Molly goes down for “Quiet Time.” It’s supposed to make a nap sound more appealing. It doesn’t work, and she’s not usually quiet, either. I go downstairs to work on drafting a research paper proposal assignment for the development contract I’m working on.
2:45 I’m frankly shocked that Elliott is still asleep. I’m afraid to start anything that would take too long so I decide to clean my front window. You know, the one that Molly so graciously decided to paint with a basting brush and her own saliva.
3:00 Elliott wakes up. Time for him to nurse again.
3:10 I get a call from library that I accidentally returned a Pleasant Grove library book to American Fork. I decide to get Molly out of her non-nap and just get it before bus comes.
3:30 We get the book without incident and are heading back from library when I get a flat tire! The panic sets in now because Miles's bus is showing up in 10 minutes.
3:32 I pull into 7 11 and try to borrow a phone to call Gerrit. Some extremely, extremely nice people change my tire when Gerrit doesn’t answer. Panic panic panic....the bus comes at 3:40!!!!!
3:55 I show up at home ready to call school and get Miles. Thankfully he is there! The bus driver is very high on my list of favorite people right now for letting my kid come home instead of taking him back to school (I did end up thanking her profusely the next day.)
4:00 I called Gerrit and set up a plan to get the car fixed.
4:15 Time to go through Miles’s backpack and look at all the fun papers he brought back from the end of the school year. I set up Adventure to Fitness for him and Molly.
4:20 I had to call my mom because I was still kind of shaken up
4:50 Decide to put that stupid book away...but it wasn't in the house. It wasn't in the car. I must have put it on top of the car and driven away. Facepalm. It’s time for another blackberry pie bar. (Hindsight note: I thankfully found it the next day. It had fallen between the chair and the cup holders. Sooooo grateful!)
4:55 Feed Elliott again
5:15 Work on dinner. Sooo glad I picked something easy for tonight. Make a salad dressing, toss with a bag of spring mix. Slice a tomato, toast some bread, serve with roast beef.
5:30 Break up an argument between Miles and Molly that I’m not sure what it was about or how it started. Convince them to come downstairs and watch My Little Pony.
6:00 Gerrit comes home. Yay! He looks at tire and agrees it is wrecked.
6:15 Eat dinner. Molly spends whole time screaming because she doesn’t want dinner and thinks that sitting in a chair is boring. She eventually eats roast beef and sort of eats her bread eventually. Everyone else eats great.
6:40 Watch the last 10 minutes of an episode of the british bake-off while feeding Elliott. Now I really want to bake something.
7:00 Time for my live exam review session! I spend the next hour reviewing socialization and social interaction with 8 students who could come, and then send out the recording for the rest of my students. Gerrit takes the kids upstairs to play in their rooms.
8:10 I go upstairs to help Gerrit get the kids ready for bed. We put on pajamas, brush teeth, read stories, and fight kids for about twenty minutes. Always a good time!
9:00 Sit down and feed Elliott for the last time while we watch "Agents of SHIELD."
10:00 Elliott goes to bed and so do I!
